Launch of WASP: 2nd tool of the HARMLESS SSbD Decision Support System
What is WASP?
WASP is an online tool that provides Safe- and Sustainable-by-Design (SSbD) advice in early phases of innovation. After answering 12 main questions (and 3 optional ones), WASP provides the user with:
* Warning flags – It attends the user on particular points of attention that may require further investigation to be able to waive a concern or follow-up with further assessment to monitor it
* Design Advice – It provides design principles that may help to create better SSbD design versions
* Screening Prioritization – It provides assessment advice to further assess the concerns and to help prioritize the alternative SSbD versions regarding SSbD. This includes advice on what assays and guidelines to follow and which descriptors to measure (in the lab phase of the project)
WASP stands for Warning flags, design Advice & Screening Priorities
WASP was created by the combined effort of several partners of the HARMLESS project, i.e. TNO, BASF, BfR, CIT and TEMASOL. Inspired by tools such as LICARA Innovation Scan, StoffenManager Nano, Early4AdMa and the Swiss precautionary matrix, but realizing that many existing tools are hampered because they A) may be laborious to fill in, B) ask for information that is not yet available in the early phases of development and C) may cover only a particular subset of aspects. Therefore, only the most useful and relevant questions for SSbD were redesigned into WASP and further extended to create a quick screening tool that provides points of attention as well as design and assessment advice.
Within the SSbD-Decision Support System (DSS) the user is guided through a SSbD workflow that follows the innovation stages from early to pilot phase. The first step in this SSbD workflow is AMEA (Advanced Material Earliest Assessment), the second step is WASP and the third step is ASDI (Alternative SSbD Design Inspector) . In fact, WASP will provide a list of descriptors to be measured/assessed in ASDI.
Who shall use WASP?
WASP has been developed to support:
* industry, in the early phases of innovation
* regulators, as part of an Early Warning System (EWS)
Where / when to apply WASP?
WASP is meant to be used in the early phases of innovation (the ideation and business case phase), after AMEA has been used to obtain the first categorization and design principles, but before entering the lab phase and the use of ASDI to help in selecting designs. In this phase, WASP helps industry with a simple questionnaire to a) provide warning flags (points of attention), b) provide design advice and c) assessment advice (including which descriptors to use in ASDI). WASP can also be used by regulators as part of an Early Warning System (EWS).
How to access WASP?
WASP has been launched and made freely available.
