Launch of the HARMLESS SSbD-DSS

What is the HARMLESS SSbD-DSS?

The HARMLESS Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design Decision Support System (SSbD-DSS) is an online platform meant to support its users in making decisions during the design and re-design process of nano-enabled advanced materials, such that they are safe and sustainable, and still performant. The SSbD-DSS guides designers through a workflow of several tools and provides design and assessment advice. By adapting the data and resource requirements to each innovation stage, the SSbD-DSS facilitates practical implementation of SSbD, supporting the user to find a transparent balance between safety, sustainability and performance.

Within the SSbD-DSS, the user is guided through a SSbD workflow that follows the innovation stages from early to pilot phase. The first step in this SSbD workflow is AMEA (Advanced Material Earliest Assessment), the second step is WASP (Warning flags, design Advice, Screening Priorities), the third step is ASDI (Alternative SSbD Design Inspector) and the fourth step is the LICARA nanoSCAN 4.0 tool and optionally additional more detailed and tailored methods and predictive modelling tools.

Who shall use SSbD-DSS?

The SSbD-DSS has been developed to support:

   * industry, specifically innovators or product designers in developing safe and sustainable products

   * regulators, in the prioritization of materials, the identification of critical issues and regulatory actions

Where / when to apply the SSbD-DSS?

The SSbD-DSS is specifically developed for nano-enabled advanced materials. As the focus of the HARMLESS project was on nano-enabled advanced materials, including multi-component, metal- and carbon-based and low and high aspect ratio materials, the applicability domain of the SSbD approach and SSbD-DSS is limited to materials that consist of particles or fibres or are expected to release particles or fibres within their life cycle.

Designers can use the SSbD-DSS throughout the whole innovation process, from the very early to the late developmental stages. AMEA and WASP are meant to be used in the early phases of innovation (the ideation and business case phase) to identify early warning flags and provide design and assessment advice. ASDI provides guidance on descriptors to measure in the lab phase for informed decision making on the most optimal SSbD version. LICARA nanoSCAN 4.0 can be used in the early pilot phase for advice and interactive visualisation of the various SSbD aspects to support the user in decision making..

How to access the SSbD-DSS?
