HARMLESS @ Austrian Chemistry Days 2024

The 2024 edition of the Austrian Chemistry Days (ChemieTage 2024) took place from 23-25 September in Graz, Austria. The biennial Austrian Chemistry Days is an essential event for the national and international chemistry community, offering a unique opportunity for stakeholders to come together, exchange ideas, and promote advancements in sustainable chemical practices. It featured presentations, discussions, and poster sessions aimed at advancing the field of chemistry, with a special emphasis on innovation and sustainability.

The event gathered 350 attendees from the national and international chemistry community at the Technical University of Graz (TU Graz) interested in the latest research in Safe and Sustainable Chemical Practices. With academia representing 95% of the participants and industry making up the remaining 5%, the event provided a valuable platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and showcasing cutting-edge research.

Among the attendees was Matiss Reinfelds from BNN, who presented a poster titled “Enhancing Awareness and Implementation of Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design (SSbD) in European Chemical Practices.” His poster highlighted the theoretical foundation of SSbD, a concept that focuses on designing chemical products and processes that are safe and sustainable throughout their lifecycle. The poster also promoted, among others, some key EU-funded projects in the SSbD field, e.g., HARMLESS, SSbD4CheM, and BreadCell, as example of how the EU invests in advancing on SSbD. These projects are designed to foster the development of safer, more sustainable chemicals, a priority for the EU’s environmental and industrial policies.
