Contribution to discussions on Standardisation & Harmonisation in Vienna and Berlin

On March 19th and 20th, Andreas Falk from BNN actively participated in two important events focusing on the standardisation and harmonisation of practices related to nanomaterials and advanced/innovative materials. These meetings provided valuable opportunities to bring insights and findings from the HARMLESS project and other projects within the NSC community into wider discussions with key stakeholders.

The first event took place on March 19th in Vienna  (Austria) during the Austrian Standardisation Group (ASI) meeting, which serves as Austria’s mirror group for ISO TC229 and CEN TC352. Representatives from public authorities, industry, and research and technology organisations (RTOs)/academia discussed current and future work items related to characterisation and testing methods for nanomaterials and advanced/innovative materials. The meeting served as a platform to align Austria’s contributions to international standardisation efforts under ISO and CEN frameworks.

The following day, March 20th, Andreas Falk attended the SMURFnano stakeholders’ workshop in Berlin, hosted by the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM). This workshop was part of BAM’s NSC-affiliated project SMURFnano, which focuses on the development of smart testing strategies and interlaboratory comparisons for nanomaterials. During this hybrid event, experts from public authorities, industry, and academia explored synergies between current research and the development of intelligent testing strategies aimed at improving the reliability and comparability of nanosafety assessments.

BNN continues to actively contribute to European and international efforts to advance the safe and sustainable development of nanomaterials through engagement in such key initiatives.
